MAG-pie & MAG-net Alert!…

Post #43 on Iron Toxicity: The “gestation & birth” of Iron Toxicity!

OK, so today’s my Natal Day!… And let me 1st thank the many, many, many folks who’ve taken the time to reach out & celebrate with me… I’m most grateful to this loving & giving community, and I’m also grateful to my Parents, esp. my Mom, for allowing this little life to exist…

My Mom’s Dad, John M. deLashmutt, Jr., had an annual tradition of GIVING a gift to his family on HIS natal day. That always left a BIG impression on me… And given that MAG is a 2nd-family of sorts for me, well here’s my gift to you all… It’s a bit complicated, a bit comvoluted, and also a bit counter-conventional… (I know, big shock, eh?…)

I realize that I’ve been an incessant bore this year with my non-stop Posts about “Iron Toxicity…” (Enough already, right?…) Well, we ain’t done yet, and today’s Post is intended to drill into HOW this Iron-ic chaos starts — from the very inception of life…

I’m piggy-backing on a recent Post by Mandy Chadwick, ante-natal Coach extraordinaire, who shared some illuminating research recently (Steer, et al, 1995), but only FOUR people noted its existence last week.

Quite frankly, that is NOT good enough as this contemporary issue of “Anemia of Pregnancy” is COMPLETELY OUT OF CONTROL & COMPLETELY MYTH-GUIDED by piss-poor clinical training & piss-poor understanding of basic mineral metabolism, esp. as it relates to Hemoglobin & Red Blood Cells. (Please forgive my profanity… it’s my b-day, so I’m acting out… )

It turns out that among the MOST IMPORTANT aspects of early life, as a mammal, is creating & managing our Red Blood Cells.

https://www.hindawi.com/journals/ah/2011/473709/

An important quotation from the very beginning of this article by Fraser et al (2011):
“The first mature cells to arise in the developing mammalian embryo belong to the erythroid [Red Blood Cell] lineage. This highlights the immediacy of the need for red blood cells during embryogenesis and for survival.”

And for those that have been following my incessant yammering these past twelve months, you KNOW that EVERY FACET OF RED BLOOD CELL FORMATION & METABOLISM IS COPPER DEPENDENT… )

It AIN’T ABOUT IRON STATUS, we know that, right?…
http://www.canaltlabs.com/…/The_copper-iron_chronicles_The_…

(If you haven’t read this CLASSIC article, please do so… It explains HOW & WHY this has become SOOOOOO Iron-ic & confusing …)

And what this Fraser (2011) article is highlighting is yet ANOTHER aspect of Hemoglobin metabolism that is COPPER DEPENDENT: Heme Oxygenase-1 (HO-1) protein that is the rate-limiting enzyme in the breakdown of Hemoglobin. Ideally, theses RBCs that carry the Hemoglobin that carry the Oxygen are supposed to live, on average, ~120 days, and then they get recycled. But it turns out, that when there is a COPPER DEFICIENCY, the amount of HO-1 INCREASES, thus causing an INCREASE in the rate of Hemoglobin turnover…

(This is NOT an insignificant FACT about RBC/Hgb metabolism…)

I would go so far as to state that the research that Mandy brought to our attention, esp. the Steer, et al, 1995 in BMJ, is among the MOST POWERFUL studies to explain HOW & WHY Society is being METHODICALLY EXPOSED TO EXCESS IRON…

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2548871/

Hemoglobin in a pregnant women — esp. in the 2nd half of the pregnancy — is SUPPOSED to DROP to 8.5-9.5 mg/L…

Please re-read those numbers ^^^^, AGAIN…

This is a CRITICALLY important fact and set of studies that challenges the conventional clinical paradigm of where Iron levels are supposed to be during the course of a HEALTHY pregnancy…

Again, what they found is that as Hemoglobin DROPS, birth weight of the infant RISES… HIGH Hgb is a sign of potential Pre-mature birth and pregnancy risk…

PLEASE RE-READ THOSE CONCLUSIONS, esp. if you are or are expecting to get pregnant or know someone who is…

So, then, what’s the BIG DEAL about adding Iron to a woman who’s Hgb appears LOW?!?…
– It’s a CLEAR signal that — more likely than not — that she AND THE BABINO are Copper deficient…
– It INCREASES the chances of undermining the production & metabolism of Ceruloplasmin that is SOOO KEY for proper & healthy Copper metabolism…
– It INCREASES the chances for Oxidative Stress in BOTH the Mom and developing Fetus. A particularly poignant and penetrating look at this dynamic was outlined by Keyer & Imlay (1997):

http://www.jbc.org/content/272/44/27652.full.pdf
(This research will send a *chill* down the spine of those who read it, and THOSE TAKING IRON SUPPLEMENTS & THOSE GETTING IRON INFUSIONS…)

I encourage ANY who are pregnant, or planning to get pregnant to READ & STUDY this research carefully. Please share it LIBERALLY with your Obstetrician, Midwife, etc. and do NOT assume that they know these Iron-ic issues, understand these Iron-ic implications, nor practice in a way to AVOID Iron-ic impacts!

PLEASE, DO NOT ACCEPT THE “Iron-ic” DECLARATIONS OF YOUR “BABY” PRACTITIONER, until you have had the FULL Monty Iron panel and had it PROPERLY interpreted… PLEASE!

Sorry for the length of this Post. It’s an important topic on an “important” day of the year!… I sincerely hope that it finds you well & eases your issues around this timely topic…

A votre sante!
